At these early stages of life, caregiver involvement and reinforcement of the therapy skills at home is critical for success. Young children learn best through repetition coupled with extrinsic motivation (i.e., praise and rewards), therefore it is important that caregivers know how to extend the therapeutic techniques to the home environment so that children get significant practice.

For adolescents, the idea of personal autonomy and confidentiality becomes even more important. At this stage, most individual therapy sessions are one-on-one. However, the adolescent still operates within the family system and needs parent support. When parents are included at the end of the visit, I work towards the teen presenting the new information/therapeutic skill to the parent versus the information being presented by me. I want to help facilitate an open dialogue between the teen and their parent. Please rest assured that I will always communicate if I have any concerns about your teen’s safety.
